Open iTunes.
Click the name of the fifth generation iPod underneath the "Devices" category that is on the left side of iTunes.
Click the "Summary" tab at the top of the middle iTunes window.
A fifth generation iPod is simply the fifth version of an iPod such as the Nano or iPod Classic. If you are constantly experiencing problems with the iPod, you can reformat the player. Doing so will erase the hard drive on the fifth generation iPod and put that device back to its original settings. Regardless of which fifth generation iPod you own, the player can be reformatted or "restored" using the Apple program iTunes.
