Connect your iPod to your computer using the included USB link cable. One end plugs into the port on the bottom of the iPod and the other plugs into a USB port on your computer. The iPod is a plug and play device, meaning that when you plug the device into your computer for the first time it will automatically recognize the connection and install the appropriate drivers on your computer. Plug your iPod into your computer and give it a few seconds to do this.
Connect your computer to the internet and open iTunes. With the iPod connected to the computer, click on its name from the left side of the main iTunes program window. This will bring up your iPod 4th Generation's settings page. Click on the button that reads "Check for Updates" to download any available software updates for your iPod's operating system. If these updates are available they will be downloaded and installed automatically. At this point it is safe to sync music files to your device.
The iPod 4th generation was another in a long line of Apple's popular consumer-level portable music playing devices. It has since been replaced by the iPod Classic which added the ability to play videos as well as a 120 or 160GB internal hard drive. The 4th generation iPod could only play digital music files and came with a 20GB hard drive. Properly setting up a 4th generation iPod requires a bit of software installation before you can get things going.
